General description

Pristav is intended for automatic virus protection of the Microsoft Word. The current version works with Microsoft Word 6, 7(95) and 8(97), working under OS Windows 3.X/9X/NT. Pristav currenly supports Russian or English language.
The protection mechanism of Pristav is based on plugging into Microsoft Word special macros and program files, which carry out preprocessing Word documents, no matter how did you call Microsoft Word:

Launching Word from Windows Explorer and other programs;
Drag-n-drop document on Word icon;
Loading of document from command line ( start <my_document.doc>);
Regular opening of a document from a menu File -> Open.

Work modes

Depending on options set by the user Pristav does the following:

Reconvertation - deletion of all available macros from document and converting of files from DOT format to DOC format;
Sterilization - deletion of the links to the potentially dangerous macros in document, so viruses can not get control work process.

The Reconvertation mode provides 100% protection, as infected files will be converted from a DOT-format to a usual DOC-format. The files that are not in Microsoft Word format will not be changed. This mode is most reliable; the only limitation is that user macros are not available. However, that macros in the documents are sledom used, the Reconvertation mode is recommended. The using of this mode guarantees the protection against not only all known at the present day Word marcro viruses, but also allows to protect the computer from new, unknown ones. Unlike scanners, existing at present moment, which after curing infected documents keep traces of the macros, Pristav cures these documents without keeping these traces. The document that was cured by Pristav does not call Microsoft Word anti-virus warning.
The Sterilization mode allows using of macros in a document. However, document is scanned and links to potentially dangerous macros are renamed. Thus, on the one hand, the viruses lose possibility to receive control, and with other the macros that are not potentially dangerous are allowed to use. The only limitation is that in Sterilization mode it is not possible to use macros, which names are considered potentially dangerous by Pristav. In current version following macros are considered potentially dangerous:

Setup Package
The software is supplied in two variants: on CD-ROM disk or as archive files for trasferring via Internet or using floppy disks.
You can get files via Internet: pristav8.exe. Both are self-extracting archives distribution package. To install software you need to copy pristav8.exe to any directory and launch it. It will unpack following files in currend directory:

In case of delivery on CD-ROM, the software is completely is ready for installation. In the root directory of CD-ROM there are additional files and directories.

Installation of Pristav
The installation of should be made on virus-free computer. If the user suspects macroviruses on the computer, it is necessary to delete the system NORMAL.DOT template before installation. After deleting this file you need to start Microsoft Word, without opening any documents and setup user-defined options, if they are needed, and exit Word. When you are done, the new system template will be created which will not contain macroviruses.
The main stage of Pristav setup consists of running INSTALL.EXE program. If Pristav is supplied on CD, the setup will be launched automatically. If the autorun is turned off, or if Pristav is supplied in file archives, you need to run INSTALL.EXE manually. The setup program automatically detects your Word version and installs Pristav into it.
If there are several versions or copies of Microsoft Word installed, you need to execute a separate procedure of Pristav Installation for each copy of Microsoft Word. Before installation it is necessary to turn off any older versions of Pristav. It can be made from Pristav menu. Unless you turn off older version, you will not be able to install newer version.
In this case installation of Pristav should be made from the Microsoft Word by opening document SETUP67.DOC (for Microsoft Word version 6 or 95), or SETUP97.DOC (for Microsoft Word 97). In Windows 3.xx open the document SETUP31.DOC. Files SETUP31.DOC, SETUP67.DOC and SETUP97.DOC are templates of the document, but have the DOC extension only for the convenience of the user. These files have a number of the macros that allow installing, deinstalling and changing the preferences of Pristav.
ATTENTION! Because of features of the Windows 95 and Microsoft Office 95 during installation of Pristav in preferences of Windows Explorer you need to reset check box “Hide file extensions for known file types".
